Because we brush our teeth so often, the task likely becomes mindless, which can result in an improper brushing technique. This is why it’s important to brush up on the brushing basics so you can remind yourself how to properly brush. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Susanne Baaqee, has some tips for you.

First, remember to brush your teeth twice each day for two minutes each time. Don’t rush when you brush. Being thorough and concise will help you properly and effectively remove the plaque and other harmful substances from your teeth and gumline. If you have a hard time brushing for two minutes, just watch a two-minute YouTube video, listen to a short song, or set a timer when you brush.

Second, remember to use the proper equipment when brushing. It’s best to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. The soft bristles clean the teeth and care for the gums. The fluoride toothpaste strengthens the enamel and prevents dental issues. When you have used your toothbrush for longer than 4 months, it’s time to replace it.

Third, remember to keep your toothbrush clean. All you need to do is rinse the bristles with warm water when you’re done brushing. Then, store the toothbrush upright in an area where it can dry. Then, once the bristles are no longer wet, place a toothbrush cover over the brush if you desire.
