Having bad breath is extremely inconvenient, especially while you are aligning your smile with braces. However, bad breath comes with the territory of orthodontic treatment if you don’t have improved oral hygiene.

Bad breath generally occurs when food gets stuck in your appliance for a long amount of time. As the food sits there, it sends an odor into your mouth, giving you bad breath. Now, treating this problem is easy and doable, all you need to do is:

· Brush your teeth: We recommend brushing your teeth after each meal and snack. Brushing will help you remove the food particles that get stuck between the appliance and your teeth. If you brush with minty toothpaste that contains fluoride, you will also have fresher breath along with a cleaner smile. All you need to do is clean your tongue when you’re done.
· Floss your smile: Flossing also helps with bad breath because it cleans the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth that your toothbrush couldn’t scrub. This will help remove the mysterious food particles that are causing bad breath but are hard to find. Make sure you floss after each meal and snack as well.
· Use mouthwash: Mouthwash will clean your smile and kill the bacteria that is causing the bad breath. Try rinsing at least once a day with a beneficial mouthwash that your dentist or orthodontist recommends.
