In a perfect world, you should be seeing your dentist for regular checkups every six months, but the sad truth of the matter is that many people only go in once a year, if even that. Those that don’t go in until they have a problem risk greater difficulty and misery in the future. If you have issues with dental anxiety keeping you from coming in, or financial problems due to lack of dental insurance, talk to us here at Classic Smiles. We will do everything in our power to make you comfortable and give you the dental care that you need.
Here is a short review of what happens in a routine dental checkup:
After a friendly receptionist welcomes you to the office, you’ll be escorted to a comfortable dental chair made specifically to help you relax. The hygienist or CDA (certified dental assistant) will review your history with us to see if anything has changed since your last visit–mediations you’re taking, etc. If this is your first visit or it’s been a long time since you were last here, we will want to take some new dental x-rays so the dentist can see the insides of your teeth, gums, and jaw. The hygienist or CDA will do an initial examination while she is giving your teeth a thorough cleaning. Using special instruments made for the task, she will remove all the calcified tartar and plaque, floss between your teeth, and with a tiny spinning brush and some abrasive, polish your teeth to make them harder for plaque to adhere.
Then the dentist comes in and will perform the ultimate examination. she will check the areas of interest found by the assistant, if any are reported. she will use specialized dental instruments to probe, looking for decay, wear, damage and signs of gum disease. she will also feel around your neck and jaw to screen for oral cancer. Any concerns will be discussed and professional advice dispensed. Once satisfied there are no critical issues, you will be given a clean bill of health and asked to return again in six months.
